What is a die spring?
A die spring is a heavy-duty compression spring with a rectangular wire cross-section, specifically designed to withstand high loads within a limited installation space. Die springs are mainly used in stamping, punching and bending tools, dies, presses and other industrial applications where high spring forces and a long service life are required.
Thanks to their rectangular wire cross-section, die springs can generate high forces while remaining relatively compact. This makes them particularly suitable for applications where a standard compression spring cannot provide sufficient force.
Applications of die springs
Die springs are commonly used in:
- stamping and punching tools;
- dies and presses;
- bending and forming tools;
- machine and tool construction;
- ejector and return systems;
- industrial applications requiring high spring forces within a limited installation space.
Die springs according to ISO 10243
Many die springs are manufactured in accordance with ISO 10243. This international standard specifies, among other things, standardised dimensions and load classes for die springs.
The colour of the spring indicates its load class:

Thanks to standardised diameters and lengths, different load classes can be used within the same available installation space.
However, colour alone is not sufficient to select the correct die spring. The required force, available spring travel, spring rate, installation space and desired service life must also be taken into account.
